Radio Wales comes to
the club - and pumps iron!

Former Commonwealth Games Gold
Medallist Ray Williams, the current Welsh National Coach, has been the
driving force behind the establishment of Holyhead and Anglesey
Weightlifting and Fitness Centre, which has just undergone a £300,000
extension and refurbishment.

Ray was born and raised
in Holyhead, returning home with the rank of Captain after 24 years serving in the Army. Ray's confident that
the new fitness centre will prove a huge hit, despite Holyhead’s location out at
the far end of the A55.
“If the facilities are good enough, then people will be prepared to travel, and
that’s a good thing not only for Holyhead, which has gone through a tough
time with job losses, but also for North Wales,” he said.
The HAWFC club has been a popular centre for weightlifting over the years
and one of the stars is Gareth Evans, a member of the British squad in
Leeds currently training for the Olympics. The weightlifter is also
from Holyhead and is a firm favourite for selection for the London 2012
Olympics.
Ray's energy, enthusiasm and effort has been a major driver in seeing the
Holyhead refurbishment project successfully nearing its completion, although in typical modest
fashion, Ray is eager to stress the work done by members, parents and a
horde of other supporters.
“This is very much a social enterprise and we could not have done it
without such a level of support from the community,” Ray commented.
The club premises have been closed since November while extensive building
work was carried out and the official opening took place
on Thursday April 5th at the Ucheldre
Centre in Holyhead, followed by a ceremony at the nearby fitness centre itself
where the refurbished building was declared open by Bob Wrench, the well-known
local former Commonwealth Gold Medallist and the centre's head, Ray Williams.
